South Africa’s U15 national team continues its campaign at the WBSC U15 Baseball World Cup in Mérida, Mexico, having completed its opening three games against some of the strongest baseball nations in the world.
South Africa faced a difficult opening assignment against world number one Japan, going down 16–0 in five innings, before taking on world number two Cuba in their second game, which also ended in a 16–0 defeat.
The young South African side responded with a much stronger performance in their third game against tournament hosts Mexico.
South Africa kept Mexico under pressure during the early innings and competed well throughout the full seven-inning game. Mexico eventually secured a 7–0 victory, but the statistics showed a far more competitive contest than the final score suggested.
Playing under lights in the 18:30 game in front of a packed stadium and a vocal Mexican home crowd, South Africa produced their best performance of the tournament so far and showed a significant improvement from their opening two games.
Attention now turns to the remaining two group matches. South Africa face another tough challenge against the Dominican Republic next before completing the group stage against Germany on Tuesday.
The Germany encounter could provide an important opportunity for both teams, with neither South Africa nor Germany having recorded a victory thus far. Both sides will be looking to finish the group stage strongly and secure their first win of the tournament.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the South African team will travel by train to Cancún on Wednesday to continue its World Cup campaign in the placement round.
For South Africa’s young players, the tournament continues to provide valuable international experience against some of the highest-ranked baseball nations in the world.
