This week saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the South African Baseball Union and the Baseball Commissioner of the Dominican Republic.
The memorandum sees the launch of baseball relations between the countries with a number of opportunities on the cards for players, coaches and administrators from both nations.
News of the event broke in the Dominican Republic this Thursday with South African Baseball President Mr Marc Moreau meeting with the Dominican Republic Baseball Commission amidst much media fanfare and comes after months of relationship building by Mr Moreau together with the Dominican Republic Ministry of foreign affairs and several other Dominican Republic parties to see this ground-breaking initiative come to life.
The Dominican Republic accounts for more than ten percent of players in Major League Baseball and the new relationship brings about tremendous opportunities for South African Baseball.
The understanding signed by Dominican Baseball’s legal representative Mr Carlos Soltano will see both countries sharing significant educational opportunities and various exchange programmes for players, coaches and officials. Additional opportunities include training programmes for batting, pitching, defence instructors, physical trainers and umpires.
Said SABU President Marc Moreau: “We are grateful for the opportunity to interact with such a great baseball nation and look forward to bringing new opportunities to our South African Baseball members” Moreau went on to say:” Although the Dominican Republic is a small nation their dominance in world baseball sends a strong message of fighting spirit much like that of our South African Baseball players.
