As the South African Baseball Championships came to a close, the event not only celebrated the talents of the players but also recognized the dedication and support of the national umpires. The umpires play an integral role in the success of any match and their efforts are often overlooked. This year’s tournament provided the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for their unwavering support.
During the event, long-serving member Eric Blount was awarded the Umpires Roll of Honour. This award is given to those who have actively been involved in the sport for more than 20 years on a district, regional, provincial, and national level. Eric Blount is the eleventh recipient of the award, joining previous winners Ian McCabe, Peter Wellman, Gavin Gibb, Grant Rabie, Edwin Webb, Peter van der Merwe, Hendrik Kotze, Alan McCabe, Denis Philander, and Edward Van Rensburg.
The award not only recognizes Eric Blount’s commitment and dedication to the sport of baseball but also his contribution to the development and growth of the umpiring fraternity in South Africa. His service and leadership have set an example for other umpires to follow, and he has become an invaluable member of the umpiring community.
The South African Baseball Union thanks all the umpires who have dedicated their time and effort to ensure that the sport of baseball in South Africa continues to grow and flourish.
