SA Baseball NBC 24 coaches reflect and look forward

Gert van Antwerpen – Coach: Gauteng Women

“This tour has been an incredibly interesting and exciting journey.

The girls have cherished every minute of it—meeting new people, making friends, and enjoying the hospitality.
We’ve relished the challenges, and the camp’s spirits have been high. The team has appreciated the supportive and vibrant atmosphere, and after yesterday’s game, mingling with other teams has allowed them to get to know each participant from other provinces better, fostering a sense of community and guidance.

Pitching-wise, the girls have been exceptional, truly on fire, and the team has gelled perfectly. However, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges, notably the extreme heat and the high winds. The wind, being quite cold despite the sun, and the heat have made playing conditions tough, especially when hitting the ball.

But, looking beyond these challenges, this tour has been fantastic. As we approach the finals, the girls are ready and spirited, regardless of who we face tomorrow, be it us or Cape Town. We are incredibly excited for the final. It’s been a rewarding challenge.

We acknowledged to Cape Town just the other day how strong a team they are and encouraged them to keep fighting. The growth they’re experiencing is significant, mirroring our own. Ladies’ baseball is indeed growing very fast, and it’s been a pleasure to be a part of this journey.

Hayley Scott-Maree – Coach Gauteng Women U23

“As coach of the U23 – B side, we’ve made our mark by challenging the A teams, compelling them to bring their best players to face us. We’re eagerly anticipating our match against Mandela Bay for third place, which highlights the growth in women’s baseball.

The competition between the A sides has been fierce, promising a closely contested finale focused on pitching and batting. Our first game was a draw, and the last was competitive throughout.

As the National Team Head Coach, I’m thrilled with the increased competition and growth in participant numbers across both junior and senior women’s categories. It reflects positively on the future of women’s baseball in our country.”

Kevin Johnson – Cape Town Asst Coach

“This season has showcased a remarkable difference in skill and strategy, particularly between the powerhouse teams of CTBF A, B, and Gauteng A, and the rest.

Yet, amidst these competitive dynamics, the spirited Limpopo team has been a breath of fresh air, bringing an infectious energy to each game. Their young talents are a beacon of hope for the future of our sport, underscoring the potential waiting to be unlocked with the right development.
Reflecting on CTBF A’s formidable lineup, it’s clear they bring an impressive arsenal to the field, anticipated to give them the upper hand against Gauteng A.

However, history reminds us of last year’s surprise when Gauteng A overcame odds to clinch victory against CTBF A in the finals. This narrative of unexpected triumph adds an exhilarating layer to the competition, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of baseball.

This year, CTBF A combines the zest of youth with the wisdom of experienced players, a blend that has served them well so far. With SA pitchers Jared Elario and Dean Jacobs leading the charge, their strategy looks solid. Yet, Gauteng A is not to be underestimated. SA pitcher Damon King, who last year managed to neutralize CTBF’s dynamic offense, is ready to shine again. Supported by the run-scoring prowess of national players Victor Ngoepe, Brandon Boullion, and Rowan Ebersohn, Gauteng A is poised for another spirited performance. The anticipation builds for what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in the annals of our sport, highlighting the growth, talent, and passion that define baseball in our community.”
