South Africa arrive and ready for WBSC Baseball5 World Cup

The South African National Baseball 5 team begins their quest for further glory when they begin their WBSC campaign at the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup from 7-13 November in Zocalo, Mexico City in Mexico.

Having already made South Africa proud by winning the African Championships in Tanzania earlier this year, there is no doubt the team will be striving for greater heights when they take on the rest of the world in the next few days.

Under the guidance of coaches Americo Juma and Hayley Scott the team has been put through their paces since selection, and now several national training camps later are ready for this auspicious occasion.

The Baseball5 World Cup sees two pools of six teams with South Africa in Group A and up first against Cuba on 8 November 2022 and then Hong Kong and Mexico the following day followed Japan and Lithuania on 10 November all from Pool A before the teams move into the super rounds to play the Group B teams depending on the ranking from the round robin opening rounds.

The game of Baseball5 is most likely South Africa’s fast-growing sport and since the launch of the new format, which sees a mix gender team playing with no bat and only a soft ball, several clubs and schools have adopted the game.

The Baseball 5 World Cup has brought several unique elements to the sport and is very much aligned with current sporting trends including the digital space and in addition to trophies and medals will see several digital prizes (NFT) awarded to star players.

The whole tournament with more than fifty matches can be followed live and worldwide through the WBSC OTT Platform GameTime.

Baseball5 is played in games featuring a series of the best of three matches. Every match consists of five innings.

The tournament’s opening game will feature Lithuania against the host Mexico.

The number of active players per team during a game is five. The defensive team must always have a minimum of two athletes per gender on the field. The same applies to the official line-up.
