South Africa proudly close the curtain on WBSC Baseball5 World Cup

This week saw the curtain close on the World Baseball 5 World Cup in Mexico where South Africa put in a star performance.

South Africa, the current African Champions went into the competition having qualified after winning the 2022 African Championships in Tanzania earlier this year.

With twelve teams from around the world qualifying for the event South Africa went into the competition drawn in Group A which included the ultimate winners Cuba and runners-up Japan before moving into the placement round. The opening round saw South Africa win two from five and then went unbeaten with five from five in the placement round.

South Africa displayed a tremendous amount of sporting spirit and camaraderie during the entire tournament as fans regularly saw South Africa dancing and celebrating with their international counterparts.

Under the guidance of coaches Americo Juma and Hayley Scott the team put in an excellent performance and with an overall seventh-place ranking South Africa can walk away proudly as the team which won the most games out of any of the African or European teams, and by doing so have firmly established their reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

In addition to the excellent on-court performance, South Africa also walks away with the knowledge that team member Louis Albertyn was selected in the WBSC All-Star Team and the inclusion of Jason Bell as one of two African umpires officiating in the finals.

The team now heads back to South Africa and will see the players return back to their clubs in their respective provinces where they will continue to promote the game of Baseball5.

The Baseball5 World Cup has again highlighted the excitement and easy application of the game of Baseball5. With several clubs and schools already applying for membership to South African Baseball for Baseball5 and with the various support resources from the WBSC and South African Baseball there is no doubt that the game of Baseball5 is here to stay.
