South Africa U18 get started at WBSC World Cup

The South Africa U18 side got their World Cup campaign off to a start when our U18 side stepped onto the field in Okinawa, Japan, to face Cuba in their opening game. After months of build-up and a long journey across the globe, the boys were finally able to pull on the green and gold and test themselves against some of the world’s best young baseball talent.

The trip itself was no small feat – a long-haul flight to Hong Kong , followed by a transfer down to Okinawa, meant plenty of hours in the air and a 8 hour layover on the move. Yet when the squad touched down, there was a buzz of excitement and relief. The players quickly settled into their new surroundings, soaking up the atmosphere of an international tournament and enjoying the chance to represent South Africa on the biggest youth stage.

Today’s game against Cuba was always going to be a tough introduction, and while the result didn’t fall in our favour, there were promising signs. Joshua Botha recorded South Africa’s first hit of the tournament, a moment that lifted the dugout, while AD Osman showed patience with a solid walk. On the mound, young Connor Stander came in for a clean inning of relief, striking out a Cuban hitter and reminding everyone that this team has the tools to compete.

Importantly, spirits remain high. The team is in good shape, bonding strongly, and taking the experience in stride. Several family members have made the journey to Japan to lend their support, adding to the positive energy around the camp. Back home, the messages of encouragement have been pouring in from teammates, clubs, and supporters across the country, reminding the boys that the whole South African baseball community is behind them.

The World Cup is about more than just wins and losses – it’s about growth, exposure, and representing the country with pride. This first outing has given South Africa a taste of the level required, and now the focus turns to building momentum and showing their fight in the next fixtures.
