South Africa’s U18 team continued their journey at the WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup with their second game in Okinawa, showing grit and determination despite a tough 9–1 loss to Puerto Rico.
There were important positives to take away. Jordan Pinto delivered South Africa’s first RBI of the tournament, driving in a run and recording one of the team’s two hits. Junaid Bedford added the other, while Imaad Hassiem and Joshua Botha showed patience at the plate by working walks. On the basepaths, Hassiem and Aydee Osman each stole a base, underlining the team’s intent to stay aggressive and keep pressure on the opposition.
Behind the plate, Osman also anchored the defense, while the pitching staff rotated through innings with Jaden Michael du Preez, Stiaan Henning, and Liam van der Westhuizen all getting valuable experience on the mound.
An inspiring moment off the field added to the spirit in camp, as the team received a special donation of bats from Mr Okabe of SSK, who kindly ensured the young South Africans were equipped with top-class gear for the tournament. Gestures like these highlight the international baseball community’s support and the opportunity this World Cup provides.

While the final scoreline didn’t swing South Africa’s way, the signs of growth and development were clear. The players are gaining confidence, settling into the rhythm of the competition, and embracing the chance to represent the green and gold with pride on the world stage.
