The South African U15 Baseball Elite Training Squad (ETS) took another important step towards the WBSC U15 Baseball World Cup this past weekend as players from Gauteng and Limpopo gathered at Benoni Baseball Club for a regional selection camp.
The three-day camp formed part of the national team’s final evaluation process ahead of the World Cup in Mexico this September. Players were put through a series of training sessions and assessments as the coaching staff reviewed performances, skills and overall readiness for international competition.
Head Coach Paul van der Merwe, together with the assistant coaches Gareth Long, Thabang Letsoalo and Antonio Alexander, supported by Head of Delegation Deirdre Marquard, led the camp as they worked closely with the players throughout the weekend. The focus was on identifying the strongest combination of athletes as the selectors move closer to naming the final national squad.
Attention will now shift to Cape Town, where the next regional selection camp will bring together players from the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Once both regional camps have been completed, the national selectors will announce the final squad.
The travelling team to Mexico will consist of 20 players, while an additional two players will be named as non-travelling reserves. The selected squad will then begin its final preparations before representing South Africa at the WBSC U15 Baseball World Cup in September.
