South African Senior Men and Women’s Baseball Championships gets under way

The South African National Senior Men’s and Women’s Baseball Championships got underway today in Boksburg, Gauteng, with teams from across the country taking to the field in the opening round of competition. The Senior Men’s division features 9 teams representing Cape Town (A, B, C), Gauteng (A, B), SWG, KZN, Limpopo, and Mandela Bay, while the Senior Women’s division includes 3 teams from Gauteng (A and B) and Cape Town.

The senior tournament follows hot on the heels of the junior competition, where Limpopo did well and are looking to carry that momentum into the senior division, while KZN have made a strong return to the national arena and are already making their intentions known.

In the Senior Men’s division, Day 1 delivered strong opening results. Cape Town C beat Mandela Bay 13–1, while SWG edged Limpopo 8–7. Cape Town A secured a 10–5 win over Cape Town B, and KZN narrowly defeated Gauteng B 7–6. Cape Town B later beat KZN 13–4, while SWG continued their form with an 8–5 win over Mandela Bay. Cape Town A recorded the biggest result of the day with a 23–0 win over Limpopo, while Gauteng A beat Cape Town C 10–0. Gauteng B closed the day with a tight 14–11 win over Gauteng A.

After Day 1, Cape Town A and SWG lead the standings with two wins each. Gauteng A, Gauteng B, Cape Town B, Cape Town C, and KZN all sit with one win and one loss, while Limpopo and Mandela Bay are still searching for their first wins.

In the Senior Women’s division, Gauteng B opened with a 16–0 win over Cape Town A. Cape Town A responded with an 8–1 win over Gauteng A, while Gauteng A closed the day with a 16–2 win over Gauteng B. All three teams end Day 1 with one win and one loss.

The championships are now fully underway as teams continue building toward the later stages of the tournament.
