As the countdown to the Youth WBSC Baseball5 Africa Championships begins, Team South Africa’s Head Coach Reece Groenewald is focused on fine-tuning preparations for the highly competitive tournament. Taking place in Cape Town from 9-12 January 2025, the event will see six nations—Lesotho, Tunisia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and South Africa—competing for a chance to qualify for the 2025 Youth Baseball5 World Cup.

Groenewald has adopted a meticulous approach to ensure that the team is ready for the challenge. By implementing a strict home-based training program and enlisting the support of parents, he has created a structured environment to monitor and guide the players ahead of the final team selection.
Home-Based Training with a Purpose
The current training setup involves players following a tailored home-based program, focusing on drills, physical fitness, and tactical understanding. Groenewald is monitoring their progress closely through regular check-ins, ensuring each player stays on track with their development.
“Every player knows what’s expected of them,” Groenewald said. “The program is designed to prepare them physically and mentally for the level of competition they’ll face at the championships.”
Parents Playing a Vital Role
Recognizing the importance of a strong support system, Groenewald has involved parents in the process. Their role in ensuring players maintain discipline and motivation has been invaluable. “The parents are part of the team behind the team,” Groenewald added. “Their support has made it easier to maintain the standards we need during this critical preparation phase.”
Eyes on Final Selection
As the final team selection approaches, Groenewald is reviewing the progress of all players to determine who will represent South Africa at the championships. “This stage is about identifying not only skills but also how players handle pressure and work together as a unit,” he said.
Looking Ahead
With two World Cup spots up for grabs, Groenewald and his team are focused on delivering a strong performance on home soil. The South African squad will have the backing of local fans, including schools and clubs, who are expected to turn out in large numbers to cheer them on.
The Youth WBSC Baseball5 Africa Championships promise to be a thrilling event, and under Groenewald’s guidance, Team South Africa is gearing up to make an impact and represent the nation with pride.
