South African Baseball 5’s ready for African Championships

This past weekend saw the South African Baseball 5’s squad finalize their preparation for the African Baseball 5’s Championship set to take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 23 – 26 May 2022.

Under the guidance of coaches Americo Juma and Haley Scott the squad of four ladies and four men went into training for the weekend at the Eldoraigne High School in Centurion with a view to final preparations.

South Africa is drawn into group A which includes Zimbabwe, Tunisia Ghana and Uganda whilst group B includes Egypt, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Zambia and Kenya. There is no doubt that Tunisia, the first Baseball 5’s competitive country will be tough to face as will Egypt.

The event will see additional exposure for the Baseball 5’s format on the continent and will go a long way to grow the game as we prepare for the introduction of the format in the Youth Olympics in Dakar 2026.

South African Baseball is happy to see how Baseball clubs in South Africa have embraced the new format and supported the elite training squad players at their respective clubs as coach Americo Juma has been providing and monitoring the players training programs daily.

Now with three training camps concluded and despite the short time frames and the rapid introduction the team has adjusted well physically and mentally and is ready to go fetch the title and make South Africa proud.

The team departs South Africa from OR Tambo this 21 May 2022 and will be looking to qualify for the WBSC Baseball 5’s World Cup set for Mexico in December this year.

Coaches: Americo Juma, Hayley Scott: Team: Mariska Barnard, Juanay Kleynhans, Liandri van Rooyen, Itumeleng Moreroa, Aiden Bartes, Sylvester Maredi, Darian Pretorius, Louis Albertyn.
