South Africa’s Women’s Baseball teams continued their excellent start to the 2026 PONY International Women’s Baseball World Series Championships in Shanghai, China, with both the Senior Women and U23 Women recording impressive victories against quality opposition.
Representing South Africa are athletes selected from clubs and provinces across the country, coming together as one national squad to compete against international teams in one of the premier women’s baseball tournaments on the global calendar.
The Senior Women secured a hard-fought 9-6 victory over Hong Kong in a match that showcased the team’s resilience and determination. South Africa made the perfect start, opening up a 4-0 lead through disciplined batting and solid defence. Hong Kong responded strongly to draw level at 4-4, setting up a tense finish. The South Africans, however, remained composed under pressure and produced timely hitting in the closing stages of the game to score another five runs and pull away for a deserved 9-6 victory.
The U23 Women followed with an equally impressive performance, defeating Shenzhen 11-1. While the final score suggests a comfortable win, the match was closely contested during the opening two innings, with neither side able to get onto the scoreboard. South Africa eventually found their rhythm at the plate, stringing together several productive innings to take control of the contest. Pitcher Bonolo Tlome then delivered an outstanding performance from the circle, keeping Shenzhen scoreless over the final three innings to ensure South Africa closed out the game in dominant fashion.
The two victories continue the positive momentum for the South African teams as they progress through the tournament. The performances reflect the continued growth of women’s baseball in South Africa, with the players proudly representing the country against strong international opposition.
