South Africa’s U16 and U18 women’s baseball teams have enjoyed an unforgettable introduction to the United States following their arrival in Chicago.
Day one followed a long journey from South Africa via Dubai. The excitement began during the stopover, where the players were amazed by the sheer size of Dubai International Airport and the many shopping options available.
After a flight of more than 15 hours, the teams arrived safely in Chicago. Despite the lengthy journey, the players remained in good spirits and were excited to begin their American experience.
Day two started with visits to Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods. For the young baseball players, the visit to the sporting goods store was much like being children in a candy store as they explored the wide selection of equipment and sporting apparel.
The teams then experienced Chicago from above with a visit to 360 CHICAGO in the John Hancock Building. The observation deck provided spectacular views of the city and gave the players an opportunity to take in the scale and beauty of Chicago.
The day ended with a friendly night game at St Ignatius College Prep.
South Africa’s U16 team produced a competitive performance and held its own in a closely contested 5–4 game. The U18 team faced a more experienced squad and had to work harder throughout its encounter, gaining valuable experience ahead of the Baseball For All Nationals.
The setting made the occasion even more memorable. The games were played on a pristine turf field, with the Chicago skyline providing a spectacular backdrop.
It was an incredible experience for the South African players and a fitting start to their time in the United States. The friendly games also provided the teams with an important opportunity to adjust after the long journey and prepare for the competition ahead in Rockford, Illinois.
