South Africa’s U16 and U18 Women’s Baseball teams have concluded a memorable international tour to Rockford, Illinois, with both teams earning prestigious tournament awards that recognised their character, sportsmanship and passion for the game.
The U18 team received the Maybelle Blair “Love of the Game” Award, presented to the team in each division that best embodies a passion for baseball and a commitment to growing the women’s game. The award honours Maybelle Blair, a member of the legendary All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and celebrates teams that inspire others through their love of the sport.
The U16 team was honoured with the Shirley “Hustle” Burkovich Award, recognising the team that demonstrated exceptional hustle, heart and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The award pays tribute to Shirley Burkovich, another member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and is one of the event’s most respected recognitions.
On the field, both South African teams competed against quality opposition from across the United States, gaining invaluable international experience throughout the week. The U16 side recorded an impressive 13-10 victory over the Philly Flames, while the U18 team battled against strong opposition, including Texas Lonestars, Perfect Catch Chicago and Philly Flames.
Although the results reflected the strength and depth of the competition, the experience gained by the South African players extended far beyond the scoreboard. The opportunity to compete internationally, meet athletes from different countries and play at world-class facilities will contribute significantly to their development as players.
Following the tournament, the South African delegation travelled back to Chicago, where the players had the opportunity to experience Major League Baseball by watching the Chicago White Sox in action. It was another memorable highlight of the tour before the teams begin their journey home.
South African Baseball congratulates both teams, their coaches, management and support staff on proudly representing the country. Returning home with two of the tournament’s most meaningful awards is a fitting reward for the determination, sportsmanship and passion displayed throughout the week. The players will leave the United States with new friendships, unforgettable memories and experiences that will continue to inspire them as they prepare for the next chapter of their baseball journey.
