South Africa Baseball This Week Hosts the U23 African Championships in Boksburg
South Africa Baseball this week hosts the U23 African Championships in Boksburg, Gauteng, from 28 October to 2 November 2025. The tournament, sanctioned by WBSC Africa, serves as the official African Qualifier for the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2026, which will take place in Nicaragua from 6 to 15 November 2026.
The championships feature three participating nations – South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Benin – competing for continental honours and the opportunity to represent Africa at the World Cup.
Team South Africa will be led by Head Coach Liall Mauritz, with Head of Delegation Lindi Leigh Erasmus and Mentor Neil Adonis supporting the coaching group of Clive Pretorius, Braydon Bartle, Jono Viljoen, Theo Speelman, and Developing Coach Daniel Mokgehle.
Dr. Marc Moreau, President of the South African Baseball Union (SABU), said hosting the tournament is a significant moment for the sport in the country and on the continent. “We are proud to welcome our fellow African nations to Boksburg for the U23 Championships. This event highlights the progress of baseball in Africa and our shared commitment to growing the game across all regions. We look forward to a successful week of competition and collaboration.”
The U23 African Championships mark an important step in Africa’s baseball calendar, determining the continent’s representative for the 2026 WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup.
