Women’s Baseball gears up for big day at Boksburg Cardinals

This week, on Wednesday, 9 August 2023 sees a celebration of Women’s Month takes place as several of our South African Baseball clubs come together to celebrate Women’s Day at the Boksburg Baseball Club in Gauteng.

The day will witness various clubs uniting not only to show respect for the annual event but also as an opportunity to showcase the success of women in baseball.

With women and fans from all over Gauteng ready for action, the day kicks off with two official league matches at 10:00. Giants Baseball Ladies will face off against Valhalla Ladies Baseball, while Raiders Ladies will compete against Young Stars Ladies. Following that, the Boksburg Cardinals Ladies will play their first game against Valhalla Ladies at 13:00. Meanwhile, Palm Ridge will be in action against a combined team from Alexandra and Mets, while the Giants Ladies will take on the newly formed Vaal Dodgers from Sedibeng.

The day will witness nearly one hundred ladies competing against each other and will once again highlight the success of Women’s Baseball. The Gauteng Winter League has seen consistent competition for the Women in Baseball Teams.

South African Baseball has experienced a steady rise in participation for women and girls in baseball. Most recently, the success of the women teams showcased at the national baseball championships, also held at the Boksburg Cardinals Baseball Club in Gauteng, has been noteworthy.

With South African Women in Baseball led by renowned coach Hayley Scott and with all clubs in South Africa now mandated to have a women and girls representative, South African Baseball proudly acknowledges that the infrastructure is in place to help elevate the game to the next level.

Additional activities, such as the recent women’s support event in Cape Town that featured participation in their Totalsports fun run and the Women’s Baseball High-Performance Programme driven by CTBF Women in Baseball Commissioner Courtney Straus, have further highlighted the commitment and passion for the game.

There is no doubt that the South African Baseball 5 mixed-gender format will also significantly contribute to raising awareness and creating opportunities for women and girls.
