Historic First as South Africa Women’s Baseball Enters World Rankings, Men gain and SA U12 underway

South African Baseball is celebrating a historic breakthrough this week with the national women’s team officially entering the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Rankings for the first time ever. This recognition follows their debut international series against Zimbabwe — a landmark event that placed South Africa firmly on the map for women’s baseball development.

The WBSC’s latest rankings mark a turning point for the sport’s inclusivity and long-term planning, as the women’s programme gains international visibility and lays the groundwork for future participation. The team is scheduled to return to international competition later this year, as part of SABU’s continued commitment to growing the women’s game.

In parallel, the Senior Men’s National Team has also moved up the global rankings, climbing five places in the WBSC standings. The shift reflects ongoing efforts by the federation to maintain South Africa’s relevance in international baseball circles through structured participation and performance planning.

SABU President Dr. Marc Moreau commented: “This is a landmark moment. The official recognition of our women’s team and the men’s improved ranking show that South African Baseball is progressing in key areas. We are seeing the results of long-term investment in structures and people.”

Adding to the momentous week, the U12 National Team has arrived safely in Tainan, Taiwan, to participate in the VIII WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup. The team has already completed their first day on site, following travel, orientation, and tournament activation. Their presence at the World Cup highlights the federation’s focus on early-age development and long-term international integration.

Head Coach Shawn Schwartz shared: “We are very proud and excited about our team and the culture and ethos we have been able to instil in these young people.”

Parents, coaches, and supporters have remained fully engaged throughout the U12 journey, contributing to a strong and positive team environment off the field. The experience is seen as not only a sporting milestone, but a broader leadership and life-building opportunity for the players involved.

As South African Baseball continues to expand its footprint across youth, senior, and women’s categories, this past week represents a significant step forward in global recognition, representation, and momentum.

The South African Baseball 5 team also remains on track to increase their ranking with various national programmes and competitions on the cards and the knowledge that Baseball5 is participating in the next youth Olympics will no doubt keep everyone motivated.
