South African Baseball is preparing for one of its key national events in 2026, with the South African Baseball Championships set to take place in Gauteng under a refreshed and clearly defined format.
Previously referred to as the NBC, the national championships have been renamed while maintaining the established tournament structures. The decision reflects a practical shift in how national events are delivered, recognising that a single tournament spanning ten consecutive days is not workable for many players, administrators, or stakeholders. The revised approach also aligns better with sponsor expectations, allowing partners to support and engage with specific segments of the national programme rather than a single extended event.
The new structure sees the championships split into three standalone national events, each with its own dates, participating provincial teams, and competitive focus. The South African Baseball Junior Championships will take place from 28 March to 1 April 2026, bringing together junior provincial teams from across the country and continuing to play a vital role in player development.
This will be followed by two senior events running from 2 April to 6 April 2026. The South African Women’s Baseball Championships will see provincial women’s teams compete for national honours, highlighting the continued growth and depth of the women’s game. Running alongside it will be the South African Baseball Championships, featuring senior men’s provincial teams contesting the national title.
All three events will be hosted in Gauteng, with matches played at the home of the Boksburg Cardinals in Boksburg. The venue has a strong track record of hosting national baseball competitions and provides a centralised base for a busy and competitive national calendar.
Beyond logistical considerations, the updated format also supports more targeted investment. Government and institutional partners are able to direct resources into specific categories such as junior, women’s, or senior baseball, while the structure allows players, coaches, officials, and administrators to specialise within their respective championships. This approach strengthens both performance and administration, while still delivering a cohesive national event window.
Speaking on the revised structure, Marc Moreau said the changes are central to making the sport more attractive to partners and investors. “This format gives clarity, structure, and focus, which are critical for investment. Over the past five years we have deliberately worked towards building a federation that is credible, visible, and commercially viable. It is difficult to believe that five years ago we did not even have a website, and today we are competing with the leading federations in the country in terms of awareness and feasibility. These changes make South African Baseball easier to support, easier to fund, and easier to grow.”
With a focused schedule, dedicated championships, and strong provincial representation expected, the 2026 South African Baseball Championships promise a high-quality showcase of the sport across age groups and genders, reinforcing South African Baseball’s commitment to a modern, sustainable approach and a positive future for the game in the country. Collectively, these factors position South African Baseball as a more investable sport, offering clarity, structure, and measurable value for partners, sponsors, and public sector stakeholders.
