Team South Africa Arrives in Taiwan for World Baseball Classic Qualifier

After months of preparation and dedication, Team South Africa has officially arrived in Taiwan, ready to compete in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Taipei from 21-15 February 2025.

The players, coaching staff, and federation management departed from various locations across South Africa and internationally, meeting up at Taipei Airport before embarking on a five-hour bus journey to Tainan. The team is now settled into its pre-tournament camp, where they will play three warm-up games against local teams before heading to Taipei for the highly anticipated World Baseball Classic Qualifier.

Unmatched Team Spirit
On tour, there is a strong consensus that the team spirit is higher than ever before, with players, coaching staff, and federation management united as one. The camaraderie and shared determination to make history in Taiwan have brought the squad together, creating an environment of trust, belief, and motivation.

Final Preparations in Tainan
As part of their preparation, South Africa will face Tainan City on Sunday, followed by Tainan Power on Monday, and finally, the TSG Hawks on Tuesday. These matches will provide the squad with crucial game time ahead of the qualifiers, where they will compete against Nicaragua, Spain, and Chinese Taipei at the Taipei Dome—a venue that has reportedly sold out for all games.

A Strong and Dynamic Squad
Team South Africa boasts a uniquely South African lineup filled with a mix of local and international talent. Among the key players is Durbanville pitcher Dylan Unsworth, who features in the 14-man pitching rotation before departing for Mexico next month. The team also welcomes back experienced pitcher Justin Erasmus, who joins from Australia.

Leading from the front once again is team captain Jonathan Philips, who is set to inspire his squad with strong leadership and experience. He is backed by seasoned players such as Dayle Feldtman, Brandon Edmunds, and Brandon Bouillon, ensuring a balance of leadership and talent on the field. Additionally, the squad introduces fresh faces, including catcher Luke November, Josh November, Josh Wentzel, and Jaryd White, all of whom will be eager to make their mark on the international stage.

With the World Baseball Classic Qualifier fast approaching, Team South Africa is determined to give their all and fight for a place in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The road ahead is tough, but the squad’s passion, preparation, and unity set the stage for an exciting campaign in Taiwan.
